Sons By Faith In Jesus Christ: Galatians 3:26-4:7

By: Todd Hudnall

26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

You don’t earn, work for or deserve sonship. It comes through birth or adoption. Through faith in Jesus Christ were both born and adopted into the family of God.

27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

In this case, baptism primarily speaks of identification. We have been totally identified with Christ. Our new identity is in Christ.

28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Racial, social and gender distinctions are irrelevant when it comes to our relationship to Christ. We are all one.

29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

We are also joined to the redemptive history of the nation of Israel. That is because we are joined to Christ who is Abraham’s seed and heirs of the promise of God to Abraham.

4:1 Now I say that the heir, as long as he is a child, does not differ at all from a slave, though he is master of all, 2 but is under guardians and stewards until the time appointed by the father.

This is speaking of the Roman custom of a ceremony of adulthood when they would be given full rights and responsibilities.

3 Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world.

Before Christ came mankind was general under bondage to various elements of the world, many have their origins in the demonic, the Jews were in bondage to man made rule and religion.

4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.

Jesus came at the ideal time when there was a common language (Greek), travel was easy (Roman roads and Roman peace) and the Jewish religion was looking for the Messiah (Prophecies of the Messiah). In the midst of that time the God-man Jesus came, born into the human race through the womb of a Virgin and born under the Jewish law and through fulfilling the law was able to redeem those under the law and to provide all with adoption into God’s family.

6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” 7 Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

Now we are sons who call Almighty God, Father (Abba an intimate Chaldean term Jesus used – equivalent to daddy).  We have come out of slavery into Sonship and heriship through Christ. In these verses you see the Father, Son and Spirit at work receiving us into God’s family.
