God's Word In Our Family: Deuteronomy 11:18-20, 26-28

Deut. 11:18 “Therefore you shall lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.

God’s Word needs to saturate every part of our lives. God's Word needs to be priminent in what we do (hands) and what we think (frontlets between your eyes).

Deut. 11:19 You shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.

You will also find these words in Deut. 6:9-10. We have a responsibility to talk to our children about the Scripture. If you consider the need to do it when sitting, walking, lying down and rising up it covers every thing you are doing.

Deut. 11:20 And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates,

The principles of God’s Word should be active in our homes.  

Deut. 11:26 “Behold, I set before you today a blessing and a curse:

Deut. 11:27 the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you today;

Deut. 11:28 and the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside from the way which I command you today, to go after other gods which you have not known.

It is our choice whether to obey God’s Word or not but there are consequences to our choices. It is also our responsibility to make certain God's Word is instilled in our children. My wife, Kelly, every day make devotions with the kids a priority and I'm certain to join in at least once a week. We both also talk to our children about God's Word throughout the day and how the Bible applies in situations that arise in life.

There is an excellent children's book series called "Seeker" by Dian Layton. The stories apply many of the same lessons we are covering in the Break Free series on a child's level. I think both children and adults will find the books helpful in better understanding our walk with God. A limited number of copies are available in the Missions Cafe this week at a discounted price. If we are out, you can order them in the Cafe or from your local Christian Book Store. Personally, I have the Kindle version but it doesn't include the illustrations that the books offer.
